Growing Educator Excitement About Working in a School or District

By Dr Robert Dillon

Those that support hiring in education face the unique challenge of attracting and retaining top talent in schools and districts. For many in this position, they haven’t utilized one of the important levers that could have prospective teachers take another look, that lever is the space where the teacher will be asked to be at their most effective and efficient. This is often the classroom, but it can include multiple spaces throughout the school building. Here are eight key elements that hiring teams can promote to highlight their commitment to creating spaces that optimize efforts and support the health and well-being of educators and students alike.

Flexible and Innovative Learning Spaces

Promote the school’s commitment to flexible and innovative learning spaces. Highlight how classrooms are designed to support various teaching methods and learning styles, accommodating both traditional and modern approaches. Flexible seating arrangements allow for spontaneous collaboration, hands-on learning, and greater student engagement. Educators can enjoy a dynamic environment where they can adapt the space to meet the needs of their students.

Emphasis on Health and Well-being

Showcase the school’s dedication to the health and well-being of its staff and students. Healthy school environments include features like excellent indoor air quality, proper ventilation, natural lighting, and noise reduction. These elements are crucial in creating a space where educators and students can thrive physically and mentally. Schools that prioritize well-being demonstrate a genuine concern for the holistic health of their community, making them attractive places to work.

Movement-Friendly Classrooms

Highlight the integration of movement into the daily routine. Research supports the benefits of incorporating movement into the school day to enhance students’ physical health and cognitive performance. Describe how classrooms are equipped with furniture and spaces that encourage physical activity, such as standing desks, responsive chairs, and open areas for stretching and movement. This approach not only benefits students but also creates a more dynamic and engaging teaching environment for educators.

Student-Centered Design

Emphasize the role of students as co-designers of their learning spaces. Schools that involve students in the design process generate spaces that reflect their needs and preferences, fostering a sense of ownership and collaboration. This student-centered approach can be a significant draw for educators who value innovative and inclusive teaching practices. It also highlights the school’s commitment to creating environments that genuinely support student learning and engagement.

Spaces for Collaboration and Creativity

Promote the availability of dedicated spaces for collaboration and creativity. Modern learning environments often include areas specifically designed for group work, project-based learning, and creative activities. These spaces encourage interdisciplinary learning and allow students to apply their knowledge in practical, meaningful ways. Highlighting these facilities can attract educators who are passionate about fostering creativity and collaboration in their teaching.

Showcase of Student Work

Describe how the school showcases student work and learning processes. Spaces that display student projects, ongoing work, and achievements not only celebrate student success but also create an inspiring and motivational environment for both students and staff.
This practice demonstrates the school’s commitment to recognizing and valuing student effort, which can be very appealing to potential educators.

Quiet Zones and Restorative Spaces

Highlight the availability of quiet zones and restorative spaces within the school. These areas provide students and educators with a place to unwind, reflect, and recharge away from the hustle and bustle of the classroom. Such spaces are essential for mental well-being and can significantly enhance the overall working environment, making the school a more attractive place to work.

Technology Integration and Modern Facilities

Finally, promote the integration of technology and modern facilities. Schools equipped with the latest technology and innovative tools can offer a more engaging and effective teaching and learning experience. Makerspaces, updated libraries, and tech-enabled classrooms support a wide range of learning activities and prepare students for the future. Educators who are enthusiastic about incorporating technology into their teaching will find these features particularly appealing.

If all of these elements aren’t a current reality for the schools in which you are hiring teachers. It is essential to showcase the vision for where classroom design is headed, celebrate what has already been accomplished and showcase an openness to supporting the changes that the potential teacher may see as well. Excellent teachers are hard to find, retain and grow, so it is essential to leverage well-designed learning environments as a key differentiator. By creating and promoting spaces that prioritize flexibility, health, collaboration, and modern technology, schools can attract top talent. Well-designed environments not only enhance the teaching experience but also demonstrate a school’s commitment to innovation and well-being. These elements can be the deciding factor that attracts the best candidates to choose your school, ensuring a thriving educational community for years to come.
