Enhancing Results Through the Science of Learning Space Design

By Dr Robert Dillon

The importance of the learning environment in schools is undeniable. A well-designed physical space can significantly influence student success, encompassing their wellness, engagement, achievement, and sense of belonging. As educators and school leaders, it’s crucial to understand the impact of various environmental factors on students and how intentional design can foster positive outcomes.

Key Areas of Research in Learning Environments

This article highlights four key areas of research related to learning environments and their effects on student success:

1. Visual Noise and Clutter

Visual noise and clutter in a classroom can be distracting for students and negatively impact their ability to concentrate and learn. Reducing visual noise helps create a more focused and calm environment, allowing students to better engage with the material and reduce cognitive load. This concept is supported by evidence showing that a decluttered, organized space can reduce stress and improve students’ ability to process information effectively.

2. Student Choice

Providing students with choices in their learning environment can enhance their engagement and ownership of their learning. Flexible seating arrangements, for instance, empower students to select seating that best suits their strengths and personal needs. Research indicates that flexible seating can improve student behavior, increase motivation, and enhance productivity. Allowing students to choose where and how they learn fosters a sense of autonomy and can lead to more active and enthusiastic participation in classroom activities.

Student choice is empowering for learners. They may exist beyond school with few choices or in an overscheduled world. Both of these scenarios mute independence and stall the freedom to become self-reliant. Carefully crafted choice allows students access to materials, instructional paths and the time that they need to grow in both independence and self-reliance. Find ways to allow your learning space to support both what students learn and how they learn it. This can include explicit norms and routines on how to access and use supplies, stations that can be used to enhance the topics of learning or allow for parallel exploration of similar topics and smart use of technology to open doors beyond the classroom.

3. Spaces for Quiet and Reflection

Modern classrooms often overlook the need for quiet spaces where students can reflect and process information. However, quiet areas are essential for cognitive and emotional well-being. Spaces designed for quiet and reflection help students manage stress, focus better, and enhance their learning experience. Providing these spaces within classrooms or in dedicated areas of the school can support students in managing the demands of their academic and personal lives.

4. The Importance of Movement

Integrating movement into the school day is crucial for student health and academic performance. Studies have shown that even low-intensity activities can improve physical health, concentration, and cognitive function. Movement breaks, flexible seating that allows for physical activity, and spaces designed for active learning can significantly benefit students. Schools that incorporate movement into their daily routines see improvements in test scores, behavior, and overall student well-being.

When schools use these research-inspired ideas as design priorities, they are seeing results. These results are preconditions for academic success. Though it is difficult to make a direct connection between space design and academic test scores, we do know that space can support wellness, engagement and a feeling of possibility. Bolstering these results creates a strong foundation for academic success.

Student Wellness

A well-designed learning environment can greatly enhance student wellness. Healthy schools prioritize good indoor air quality, proper lighting, and acoustics, all of which are fundamental to students’ physical and mental health. Improved air quality and ventilation reduce absenteeism and respiratory issues, while adequate natural light boosts mood and cognitive performance. By using the research on space design, schools promote health and the best possible conditions to learn and thrive.

Student Engagement

Engagement is a critical factor in student success, and the research-inspired learning environment plays a significant role in fostering it. Classrooms that are flexible, allow for student choice, and provide opportunities for collaboration and movement help keep students engaged and motivated. Engaged students are more likely to participate actively in lessons, complete assignments, and retain information.

Sense of Possibility

Achievement arises when students feel learning is possible, and this begins with all students feeling like they belong in a learning space. Students who feel connected to their learning environment and see themselves reflected in it are more likely to achieve academically. Research indicates that environments designed with student input and that foster a sense of community and belonging can lead to higher academic performance.  Additionally, when students feel they belong, they are more confident, willing to take risks, and persist through challenges, all of which contribute to academic success.

Investing in the redesign of school environments is essential for fostering student success. Follow the research and focus on reducing visual noise, providing student choice, creating spaces for quiet and reflection, and integrating movement. Doing this allows schools to enhance student wellness, engagement, achievement, and sense of belonging. Research-inspired classrooms are not just about aesthetics but about creating functional, supportive spaces that amplify learning and personal growth. As educators and school leaders, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our physical spaces are conducive to the holistic development of our students, setting them up for lifelong success.
